Vet school
What Do You Need to Study to Become a Vet?
The GCSE subjects and A Level combinations you need for UK vet school, why Chemistry is almost always required, and how strongly grades are weighted compared to other parts of your application.
To get into vet school you need to choose subjects that meet each university's requirements, and the sciences do most of the heavy lifting. The good news is that there is more flexibility than many applicants assume, especially at GCSE. Here is what to focus on at each stage.
At GCSE
GCSE choices are fairly flexible. The essentials are a strong science foundation, with Dual Award Science accepted at every vet school, plus good grades in English Language and Mathematics. Beyond these, take subjects you enjoy and will do well in. The exact grade requirements vary widely, from grade 4 at Bristol to five grade 7s including sciences at schools like the RVC, which our GCSE requirements guide sets out in full.
At A Level
At A Level, Chemistry and Biology are the subjects that matter most, and most schools require both at grade A. It is a common misconception that Physics or Mathematics is compulsory; in most cases it is not, so choose your third subject based on genuine interest and where you will perform well. Our A Level requirements guide breaks down exactly what each school asks for.
Beyond the subjects
Grades open the door, but they are only part of the picture. Vet schools also want genuine work experience, a reflective personal statement and a strong interview, so plan these alongside your studies rather than leaving them until the last moment.
