Can You Work at a Vet Clinic with No Experience?
How to secure your first vet clinic placement when you have no prior experience: what to say, how to approach practices, and the non-clinical experience that helps you stand out to busy surgeries.
Yes, you can. Everyone has to start somewhere, and securing that first placement is the first real step towards getting into vet school. With no prior experience your role will be largely observational at first, but if you are enthusiastic, reliable and genuinely eager to help, you can quickly become a welcome extra pair of hands and learn a great deal.
How to get your first placement
The key is a good first impression. Send a polite, specific email or cover letter to local practices, farms, stables and kennels, explaining who you are, why you want to get into veterinary medicine, and the dates you are hoping for. Apply widely rather than waiting on a single reply, and follow up politely if you do not hear back. Our work experience guide has more on contacting placements and what to say.
Making the most of it
Once you are in, turn up on time, ask thoughtful questions, and keep a short diary of what you observe and learn. That reflection is exactly what vet schools want to see in your personal statement and interview, and being a helpful, engaged presence is the surest way to be invited back, which is how you build the variety of experience that schools value.

Send a polite, specific email or letter to local practices and animal settings, explaining your interest and the dates you want, and apply to several places at once. Be reliable and helpful once you are there, and keep a diary of what you learn to use in your application.
What will I do on work experience with no experience?+
Mostly observe at first, watching consultations, procedures and the daily running of the practice, and helping with simple tasks where appropriate. As you show you are reliable and keen, you are often given more to do and invited back.
